I disagree with your interpretation;Stern does not own the players. If you want to use that term, the owners of the teams themselves are really the "owners" of the players and thus the ones who should set the dress codes, as they are the ones who pay their salaries and NOT Stern.
To play devil's advocate, evn if we accept your premise, then the refs are also employees of the league and judging by what is coming out about them, the integrity of the game has been compromised.
M entire point is that compared to what players are permitted to wear and not wear, it is of very little importance relatively speaking and an obviously misplaced priority.
