Well I’m back, quite literally from the dead. Banged and bruised, and a little worse for wear, but raring to go and take this season out on a strong winning run.
It wasn’t so long ago that I was riding high. It was the middle of December and we were winning up a storm. Best season ever going all the way back to NBA 05. We launched SharpPlays.com with no Sportbook advertising. Everybody said it couldn’t be done and that we were nuts. SharpPlays quickly became the most popular site of it’s kind on the Internet, and we all know what happened to all the Sportbooks. I was working harder and longer than ever before without a break, but I was feeling good and having fun. Then the pain in my hip began.
I had just gotten over a 24 hour flu and my right hip began to hurt. By nightfall I could barely walk as the pain had spread down my leg to my knee. By the next morning I needed a cane to get around. I made an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon. He was very nice. He took X rays and everything looked fine. He sent out blood work. We made an appointment for a week later and he sent me home with a big bottle of Vicodin. 7 days later I was back with the Doc and the test results were in. My body was fighting a major league infection.
I’m not going to bore you with the gory details of all this. But I almost lost my leg. My family was told to prepare for my possible death before they cut me. It took some time in the hospital, six operations and lots of intravenous antibiotics to make things right. And I still have rehab Hell to go through so that I can walk properly. Something I never knew before. An infection can settle any place in the body without rhyme or reason. You can go to the dentist and wind up with an infection that hits your heart and kills you the next day. Scary stuff. And it happens all the time.
I’ll tell you one thing though. When you’re flat on your back, writhing in pain you find out who your real friends are FAST. And you learn a lot about the capabilities of people. I’ll admit that I am a bit of a control freak. Sometimes I just believe nobody can do things as well as I do, so I take on more responsibilities than I probably need to. I found out that others are capable of not only picking up the slack, but performing just as well as me. And doing it with a smile. So many people stepped up to the plate and knocked the ball out of the park for me. You know who your are. I thank you from bottom of my heart. Triple love to Dave, Phil, Michelle and Matt.
Now the plays have not been too good in January. No matter what I do, January always seems to be my tough month. Can’t seem to get it done, no matter how hard I try. Football has stayed strong, but college hoops has been very choppy. The good news is that February is historically one of my best months, which is why I will offer my very popular Fifty Unit February Guaranteed promotion again this year. I’ll have details posted at 313-438-3333 on Sunday night.
