Ravens (0-1) @ Titans (0-1)- Baltimore won five of last six series meetings, but only loss was 20-17 in '03 playoffs, last time these two met. Home side lost five of last seven in series. Ravens won last three visits to this site but are 0-4 in last four road openers, losing by average score of 21-9. Titans allowed 19.8 yards per pass at Pitt last week; they get backup QB Wright here, as Boller injured already. Ravens threw 54 times last week, ran 21; would expect reversal in that, as Steelers gashed Titans for 206 rushing yards last week. Last four series totals were 37 or less.
Steelers (1-0) @ Texans (0-1)- Pittsburgh lost their first road game five years in row, by average score of 29-14; they lost only meeting vs Houston, 24-6, as 13.5-point home favorites three years ago. Texans are 1-2 in home openers, and are 0-3 in Week 2 games, losing by 21-21-12 points; they gained just 25 yards last week on 9-21 passing, had five turnovers, five sacks, and 95 yards on ground. Steelers were +4 in turnovers last week, Texans -5. Five of last six Steeler road openers went over total. Jaguars (1-0) @ Colts (1-0)- Jax won two of last three vs Indy, after losing previous five times; they won at this site last October, their only win in four visits (L's by 29-7-10) and covered four of last five road openers. Colts won three of last four home openers, by 16-26-14 points- they looked tough in 24-7 at Baltimore, forcing four turnovers and three sacks. Jax had two TD's and tried five FG's in 11 drives last week, as they made use of 23-yard advantage in average starting field position. Five FG tries, though, is sign the offense still has ways togo. Jags were +5 in turnovers last week, Colts +4. Lions (1-0) @ Bears (0-1)- Detroit ended three-year road losing streak in opener here last year, blocking FG for TD; Lions won last three series games, which had average total of 26.7 Bears covered just one of last five home openers, allowing 26.7 ppg in last three. Lions lost three of last four road openers (L's by 22-28-25 points). Last week, Lions had three takeaways, held Pack to 46 rushing yards, 3.5 yards per pass attempt, and forced six 3-and-outs in 11 drives. Chicago also held Redskins without TD, but ran ball 18 times for just 41 yards, averaged 4.0 yards per pass attempt and gained only 166 total yards with rookie QB Orton under center. Vikings (0-1) @ Bengals (1-0)- Home team won eight of nine series games, but teams haven't met since '98. Underdog is 8-1 vs spread in last nine Viking road openers, with Vikes 5-1 as dog in this spot. Bengals are 3-12 vs spread in home openers (1-9 since '90 as favorite in home opener), but showed signs of being sharp team last week in Cleveland, as Palmer was 26-34 for 272 yards, while team rushed for 148 yards. Vikings were one of three teams without offensive TD; they had just 26 yards on 16 rushes, as they miss injured C Birk, leader of offensive line. 49ers (1-0) @ Eagles (0-1)- More TO drama, as Eagles face his former team, off Monday night loss as McNabb suffered bruised sternum, team rushed just 14 times for 51 yards and went 3-and-out six times on 13 drives. Niners had great win in opener, despite being outgained 405-217 and rushing ball for just 34 yards- they had punt return for TD and recovered onside kick. Their last four road openers were all decided by three or less points. Oddly, 49ers won last five visits to this site, with last loss 30 years ago. Philly lost five of last seven home openers, but wins were by 14,31 points. Bills (1-0) @ Bucs (1-0)- Odd stat of week: The last fourteen years, Bills are 13-1 vs spread in Week 2. Buffalo allowed Houston just 120 yards last week, forced five turnovers, but the offense managed just one TD, none on three drives that started in Houston territory. Gruden's Bucs were 8 for 17 on third down last week, Greise was efficient, they were plus-3 in turnovers, but Tampa is 0-3 in home openers under Chucky, losing twice in OT. Bucs are 5-2 in this series, with all seven games played here, last one in '00. Tampa is where Bills lost first of four straight Super Bowls. Ten of last 13 Buc home openers stayed under total. Patriots (1-0) @ Panthers (0-1)- Rematch of Super Bowl two years ago; Belichick gets extra three days to prepare, as he faces Carolina squad that is one of only two NFL teams playing at home first two weeks of season (Giants). Panthers were upset by Saints last week, getting TD's called back on consecutive plays at end of half, after WR's stepped out of bounds during route on both plays. Patriots are 6-2 vs spread in last eight road openers; their only previous visit here was 38-6 rout over 1-15 Carolina four years ago, at end of year. Carolina has minus-23 yard average starting field position last week, worst mark in NFL. Falcons (1-0) @ Seahawks (0-1)- Tough spot for Atlanta, flying cross-country on short work week to face Seattle team, after physical, emotional, playoff revenge win over Eagles, to face 0-1 Seahawk squad that was minus-5 in turnovers at Jacksonville, and didn't score after leading 14-13 at half. Seahawks scored with 0:47 left in half to take 14-13 lead last week; after that, in six drives, they gained total of 95 yards on 28 plays, turning ball over last three times they had it. Holmgren and Martz are both lucky NFC West is pathetic. Seahawks won 28-26 over Falcons in Week 17 last year, clinching division, their third straight series win. Rams (0-1) @ Cardinals (0-1)- Kurt Warner faces team that made him famous for first time; Arizona routed Male Sheep here last year, their first series win in last six tries, but in opener at Jersey, they allowed two special teams TD's, and gave up most points Giants have scored in a season opener since '71. Bulger was sacked seven times at 'stick, which reduced passing yardage to 316; they outgained 49ers 405-217, but allowed punt return for score, allowed Niners to cover an onside kick and averaged just 5.0 yards per pass, compared to 9.2 for SF. If Warner gets time here, he will shred porous Ram secondary. Dolphins (1-0) @ Jets (0-1)- Last week, Jets fumbled six times, had 57 yards rushing, were minus-2 in turnovers and didn't score vs Chiefs until last minute of game. Miami, on other hand, ran for 151 yards, converted 8-15 on third down, were 24-36 for 275 yards passing. Chiefs and Denver are similar foes, yet Miami is 6-point dog here. Go figure. Jets' cover in home opener last year was first in last 13 tries; they're 3-10 SU in home openers. Miami covered its last four road openers and fourteen of last sixteen- their only three losses in last fifteen road openers were by 4,6,3 points. Eight of last 11 Miami road openers stayed under total. Browns (0-1) @ Packers (0-1)- Not much to choose from here, but this year is 40th anniversary of these teams playing for NFL Championship (last one before Super Bowls started; Packers, 23-12, if you're interested). Packers failed to cover last three home openers, allowing 27.3 ppg. Last week, Pack failed to score TD; they ran ball 17 times for 46 yards, with three turnovers and poor 3rd down conversions (5-16). Cleveland made Carson Palmer look like Dan Fouts (26-34, 272 yards), but with javon Walker out for year, Favre needs to develop another go-to guy. Over is 6-3 in last nine Lambeau openers, 3-1 in Browns' last four road openers. Chargers (0-1) @ Broncos (0-1)- Home team won eight of last nine games in division rivalry, with Chargers losing eight of last nine in Mile High City, including last five, four of which were by 10+ points. Bolts are 5-2 SU in last seven road openers, and were dog in six of the seven. Denver won its last five home openers by 32-17 average; they're 14-2 in last sixteen, 11-3 vs spread in last fourteen, with five of last seven going over. SD gets TE Gates back this week; they had ball on Dallas 7-yard line at end of last week's loss, could have used him to pull out win. Denver was 1-12 on third down last week, needs major improvement. Chiefs (1-0) @ Raiders (0-1)- Vermeil won last four games in NFL's best rivalry, with average total in last three, 57.3. Oakland won its last seven home openers (last loss 28-27 vs KC), with four of seven wins by three points each- this is first time since '93 they're dog in home opener. Chiefs won three of last four road openers, scoring 37.8 ppg; they're 6-2 as favorite in road opener. Last week, Chiefs ran for 198 yards, and their defense tossed shutout until garbage time tally by Jets. Raiders have three extra days to prepare; Collins was just 18-40 passing in opener, but Raiders held Pats to 73 yards rushing. Saints (1-0) @ Giants (1-0)- Game moved from Bayou for obvious reasons; last time these two met was Joe Horn game two years ago, when Horn scored four TD's, pulled cellphone out of padding in goal post after one of them, and Saints won 45-7 over Giant squad that had quit on Fassel. America's Team won at Carolina last week, converting 8 of 13 on third down, with a plus-2 turnover ratio. Eli was just 10-23 passing last week, threw pick for score, but special teams scored twice, and D held Arizona to 31 yards rushing. Home side won six of last seven series games, with Saints losing last three at this site. Is fate still on their side? Redskins (1-0) @ Cowboys (1-0)- Washington lost last nine visits to this site, scoring 14 or less in four of last five visits; they're 1-14 in last fifteen series games, losing both by FG last year. Six of last eight series totals were 37 or less. Both sides won last week, but in different fashion. Skins were only team to win without scoring TD, and they faced rookie QB at home. Dallas beat good Charger team on road, with last minute red zone stand (SD had 1st-and-goal at 7). Brunell gets nod at QB over banged-up, and now unhappy Ramsey. Bledsoe converted 7 of 11 on third down. Under is 13-4 in last 17 Texas Stadium openers, 4-1 in last five Redskin road openers. |
